2016 Luminaria tickets snapped up in record time

Luminaria, the popular annual light-up at the Devonian Botanic Garden, is on its way to a another sell-out year, despite doubling its capacity from 2015.

“By adding a third night, and extending the hours, we were able to offer more opportunities for the public to enjoy this lovely event,” said Ruby Swanson, DBG General Manager. “Many people were disappointed when we sold out in 2015, so we found a way to increase our capacity this year, without compromising the peaceful atmosphere.”

Even with the added capacity, sales were been brisk and Luminaria tickets were snapped up, in record time, a week before the event.

The event runs Dec. 2, 3 and 4, from 5-10 pm. Advance tickets are required; there are no tickets available at the Gate.

Luminaria has become a tradition for thousands of visitors, who come to enjoy the simplicity of fresh country air, candlelight along the pathways of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden, cider, and singers by the bonfires. Illuminated “Snow Sprites” and a straw bale maze provide delights for children, and Perks Coffee will be on site selling hot dogs, chili and hot beverages to warm the insides.

“People affirm that they love this event, year after year,” said Swanson. “They come to light a candle in honour of a loved one in Memory Lane, to share a romantic stroll with their date, or to start the holiday season with their friends and family in a beautiful setting.”

New for 2016, Spruce Grove Kinettes volunteers will be on site at the event and are inviting event patrons to bring a new, unwrapped toy for kids age 0-17 for donation to their Christmas Hamper program. “We’re delighted to be partnering with this worthy charity,” said Ruby Swanson, DBG Manager. “Luminaria is an important fundraiser for the Garden that attracts thousands of visitors, and now that support can be extended to local families through the Kinette’s program.” Swanson stressed that only toys and gift cards should be brought for donation, as there is no facility to safely store food items.

Also added this year is an additional free park-and-ride shuttle location, from Superstore in Spruce Grove. Parking is limited at the Garden, and the shuttles (also running from Devon and the U of A Campus) help to minimize traffic congestion along Hwy 60.

Located in Parkland County, 5 km north of Devon on Hwy. 60, the Devonian Botanic Garden is only 15 minutes southwest of Edmonton.
