Garden photographer awarded for oil patch shots

MEDIA ANNOUNCEMENT
Oct. 27, 2015

For immediate release

Devonian Botanic Garden staff photographer Paul Swanson was awarded the 2015 Flash Forward Emerging Photographer’s prize for his images of oilsands activity and ordinary life in Fort McMurray. Swanson’s work was exhibited at a recent gala event in Toronto, and featured in Flash Forward, a book published annually by the Magenta Foundation, which showcases award-winning emerging photographers from Canada, the United States and the UK. Two of Swanson’s winning images were selected to be part of an international travelling exhibit, and will be shown in Boston and London, England.
Swanson, who has taken thousands of images of flowers, butterflies and pastoral scenery since he started working as a summer student at the Devonian Botanic Garden in 2009, doesn’t limit his subject matter to the idyllic beauty of the Garden. A recent graduate of the Photography Studies Program at Ryerson University in Toronto, Swanson has aimed his camera at urban sprawl, oilfields, athletes and more in his commercial and editorial work. “Alberta is full of stories that I want to tell,” said Swanson. “There is so much beyond the public perception of the province.”
“We are thrilled with Paul’s accomplishment,” said Kerry Mulholland, Garden Communications Coordinator. “We’ve always been proud to have such a gifted photographer illustrating the Garden’s beauty, and we’re so pleased that Paul has been recognized for his wide-ranging talent.”
The Magenta Foundation is a Canadian non-profit organization that recognizes emerging artists in an international context.

The University of Alberta Devonian Botanic Garden is a 240-acre property, located 15 minutes southwest of Edmonton, Alberta, near the town of Devon.
