Visitors to the Devonian Botanic Garden’s popular Luminaria event can share a little light with a local charity.
Spruce Grove Kinettes volunteers will be on site at Luminaria, Dec. 2, 3 and 4, and are inviting event patrons to bring a donation of a new, unwrapped toy for kids aged 0-17 for their Christmas Hamper program.
“We’re delighted to be partnering with this worthy charity,” said Ruby Swanson, DBG General Manager. “Luminaria is an important fundraiser for the Garden that attracts thousands of visitors, and now that support can be extended to local families through the Kinettes' program.”
“We’re thrilled to have the support of this exciting local event, and look forward to distributing collected gifts to deserving children in Spruce Grove and East Parkland in time for Christmas,” said Carolyn Ryan Dumont of the Kinette Club of Spruce Grove. “The need right now is tremendous, and we are expecting to distribute up to 900 hampers in the area this holiday season – an increase of over 60% from last year.”
Note: Because of the outdoor nature of Luminaria, only gifts of new, unwrapped toys or gift cards can be accepted, as there is no facility to safely store food donations.
Luminaria has become a popular tradition for thousands of visitors, who enjoy the simplicity of fresh country air, candlelight along the pathways of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden, cider, and singers by the bonfires. Snow Sprites and a straw bale maze provide delights for children, and Spruce Grove’s Perks Coffee will be selling hot dogs, chili and hot beverages to warm the insides.
With the increased popularity of Luminaria, organizers added an additional evening this year, along with later time slots each evening. Even with the added capacity, ticket sales have been brisk and the event is expected to sell out well in advance, with 97% of tickets already snapped up.
The Spruce Grove Kinettes are a non-profit volunteer and have run the Christmas Hamper campaign for the past 43 years. For more information on the Kinettes visit www.sgkinettes.ca.
