It’s an exciting time of transformation at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden! Here is an update on some of the changes to expect in 2018.
New phone number: We have a new phone system. The new main switchboard number is (780) 492-3050, and our old system of extensions will no longer be in effect. You’ll hear a menu when you call that will direct you to the department you’re looking for. If you're looking for a specific person or department, see our Staff Directory for new direct phone numbers.
Season opening date change: In 2018, the Garden is opening for the season on Friday, June 29. Although the date is later than our usual May 1 opening, the wait will be worth it. A brand new entry plaza, ticketing area and parking lot are just the first of many improvements visitors will notice when they arrive. Construction of the Aga Khan Garden, Alberta, is also scheduled for completion by the end of June, and while finishing touches on plantings and landscaping will continue throughout the summer, visitors will have an opportunity to experience, for the first time, this beautiful new feature garden. Unlike any in the province, and the largest of only a handful in North America, the Aga Khan Garden is a spectacular contemporary garden inspired by traditional Islamic design, with water features, intricate stonework and geometric patterning.
The delayed season opening will have impact on some annual events that normally occur in May and June. While it has been possible to reschedule some activities for later in the season, others, like the popular Mother’s Day Tea and Kurimoto Japanese Garden Spring Festival will be on hiatus for 2018. We are looking forward to the return of these events next year, and we’re grateful for the understanding and patience of the public, our volunteer groups and community partners.
The late season opening will not affect school field trips and wedding groups, which will continue as scheduled during May and June.
2017 season passes extended to Thanksgiving 2018: Because of the Garden’s early closure in fall of last year and late opening this year, anyone who purchased a Season Pass in 2017 will have their pass extended to October 8, 2018.
