After selling out December tickets in a flash, the University of Alberta Botanic Garden will hold over the popular Luminaria experience for 12 dates in January.
The added capacity comes in response to a swift sell-out of December tickets. Even though Luminaria expanded from its traditional three-day weekend to a month-long celebration in 2020, tickets were snapped up very quickly.
“We had a strong gut feeling, when we first expanded Luminaria to the full month of December, that the public would respond positively,” said Carl Charest, interim executive director. “It turned out to be so true. Our visitors have definitely shown us there is a strong need for a peaceful, outdoor, uncrowded activity in a beautiful setting. Now, in response to that demand, we’re happy we can extend Luminaria into January for more people to enjoy.”
Safety measures will remain in place, including a mandatory mask policy for outdoor spaces and washrooms, closure of all indoor spaces, and staggered entry times with limited capacity each night. “We’ve doubled down on safety, often going above and beyond official restrictions,” said Charest. “We’re proud of our record on safety – with over 100,000 visitors to the Garden in 2020, there has not been a single case of COVID-19 reported to us.”
During Luminaria, guests can stroll through the candle-lit pathways and illuminated displays, add a wish for the year to a Wish Tree, light a candle in honour of a loved one, and sip cider by a bonfire. Nightly entertainment, safely perched at a distance on top of a hill in the Kurimoto Japanese Garden, adds to the atmosphere.
Advance reservations are required for Luminaria. Newly added dates run Thursdays through Sundays, Jan. 14-31.
“We expect these added tickets will go very quickly,” said Charest, “so we urge people to act quickly to avoid disappointment.”
