New programming, facilities highlight 2022 summer season at Garden

May 5, 2022

Devon — The University of Alberta Botanic Garden is ready to launch the 2022 summer season, with exciting new programming and facilities for guests to experience.

The new Welcome Centre is ready to host guests for the first time. The award-winning centre is home to the Patio Cafe, where chef Joe Simpkin is introducing an enticing menu with a focus on homemade, locally sourced selections. Chef Joe is also creating new culinary experiences that will be introduced this summer.

The showhouses are open after being closed to the public for the past two years. The tropical, arid and temperate houses are an escape into fascinating biomes filled with plants from around the world.

Daily Learning and Discovery Moments will offer guests an enhanced experience included with the cost of admission. University of Alberta faculty, Garden staff, volunteers and community partners will present a variety of topics, from horticulture, wildlife and guided forest walks to natural dyes, chickens, cooking demonstrations and crafts. We’re adding more kids programming this year as well, with pond catches at the new learning dock, music, storytelling and hands-on fun. A weekly calendar of events will be posted on our website and social media accounts.

“We’re excited to offer transformational experiences for our guests,” said director Carl Charest. “These are opportunities to connect with nature while enjoying chef-created menus and moments of learning and discovery. Visiting the botanic garden is an experience like no other, and people are rejuvenated after time spent among our beautiful gardens.”

The University of Alberta Botanic Garden opens May 7, 2022 for the summer season. Hours for May are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.
