A FAMILY OUTING – Author Reading and Discussion
In celebration of Pride month, local author Ruby Remenda Swanson will be hosting a reading and discussion from her memoir “A Family Outing”, a book about her experiences of having a gay son.
Ruby grew up in a deeply homophobic time, witnessed the emergence of the gay rights movement, and saw the way the AIDS crisis had transformed the LGBT community. Despite seeing herself as progressive, she was unprepared when her sixteen-year-old son told her, “I’m gay.” A Family Outing is the story of how Ruby moved past her initial shock, fear, and denial to become a public advocate for equality and the acceptance of the LGBT community. A Family Outing, published by Cormorant Books Inc., was released in November 2016.
Ruby was born and raised in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. She has worked in public broadcasting at the CBC, and at the Children’s Television Workshop in New York City. In 2016 Ruby travelled to Ukraine twice where she met with LGBT activists and parent allies and presented sessions at the 2nd International Conference of Parents who have LBGTQI children. In 2019 the translated version of her book at Kyiv Pride in Kyiv, Ukraine.
Ruby was recognized by the University of Alberta Office of Safe Disclosure and Human Rights for her work to promote the rights of the LGBTQ community across campus. She was General Manager of the University of Alberta Botanic Garden and was a long time director of PFLAG Edmonton. Ruby lives in Edmonton with her husband.
Readings and discussions start 11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm.
