Important Summer Camp Information

Dear Parent / Guardian,
We’re so excited your child is joining us for a week of camp fun this summer at the Garden! Important information follows that you will need to prepare your child for their time at camp. Please read it thoroughly!

For a fun week outdoors, please send your child with the following, and ensure your child’s name is on all items they bring:

  • A backpack and a full water bottle. Please do not send a rolling bag or bag they have to carry in their hands or over one shoulder – they need a comfortable backpack.
  • Allergy-aware lunch and snacks. As an environmentally friendly camp, we ask that you try and bring a “garbage free” lunch with reusable containers. In order to promote the safety of our campers, we also ask for allergy-aware lunches (eg. peanut-free). Please note there are no microwaves for use.
  • Comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes that can get dirty.
  • Rubber Boots. Send on the first day of camp; they will be kept at camp for the week.
  • Rain gear if rain is forecast. We will be outside most of the day, even if it is raining!
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent.

Camp activities start at 9:00 am. You will be notified about your pick up and drop off location in advance of the camp start date.

Pick-up time for half-day camp is 12:00 pm and for full-day camp is 3:30 pm. If you wish to pick up your child early, arrangements need to be made with your camp instructor at least 4 hours in advance so we can plan to have your child ready for pick-up.

Please note that all children must be signed in and out by their accompanying parent/guardian upon drop off and pick-up from the University of Alberta Botanic Garden

Pick-up Policy

Only those names specified as eligible for pick-up on your registration will be able to leave with your child.

Late pick-up fees: A fee of 25.00 + GST will be charged for every 15 minutes (or portion thereof) beyond your scheduled pick-up end time (3:30 pm for those without pre/post care and 5:30 pm for those with pre/post care).

Our camps are outside, active and energetic. We welcome all campers; however, our camps are not designed to suit every need. Please mention at time of booking if your child requires any special considerations to make their experience at camp more successful (eg. accompanied by an aide).

Camp instructors and staff at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden who have first aid certification will attend to minor injuries (scraps, bumps etc.) if permission has been granted during registration. In the event of a moderate or serious incident, parents/guardians will be contacted immediately.

If your child is sick and will not be attending camp, please call the education department at (780) 492-3106 or email and include the first and last name of your child who will be absent. Please note that fees are not refunded for sick days.

All campers must be fully potty-trained and able to use the bathroom by themselves, without assistance, by the start of camp.

Please specify all allergies (minor and severe) for your child at the time of registration. This information will be passed on to your camp leader. However, we recommend you discuss any special considerations (severity of allergy, epi-pen use) with your camp instructor on the first day.

Our camps are about getting outside and being active. Therefore, please do not send your child with any electronics or valuables.

The Kids in the Garden program places value on respect, inclusivity and kindness. If a child’s behavior requires continuous 1:1 camp leader attention, or threatens the safety of themselves or other children, a guardian will be notified for immediate pick-up. If behavioral issues continue, the Garden reserves the right to dismiss the child from the rest of the camp. In these extreme cases, no refunds will be provided for those participants dismissed prior to the camp’s end.

If you have any questions, please contact us at or call (780) 492-3106. Office hours are Mon-Fri 9:00 – 4:00.

We look forward to seeing you this summer!
