This winter, make special memories with a unique dining experience that is full of the season’s beauty. Dine deliciously with the people you love in a one-of-a-kind setting, then step outside to enjoy Luminaria, the Garden’s annual celebration of light.
The Northern Light Dining Experience includes a three-course gourmet fondue served in one of our unique, private dining domes with views to the stars. You and your group of up to six will have exclusive access to your charming dining space for the evening. Before or after your meal, you can enjoy the snowy illuminated pathways of Luminaria, sip some apple cider by a bonfire, and revel in the beauty of winter.
Your fondue – that quintessential winter delight – will be served in three delicious savoury and sweet courses, created with ingredients sourced from local and Canadian food and beverage artisans. All enjoyed in your personal dome in a “village” of glowing structures nestled in the snow. All just a short walk from the lights, candles and displays of Luminaria.
This year’s Northern Light Dining Experience, including menu and guest comfort, has been enhanced by a collaboration with award-winning Edmonton Chef Cindy Lazarenko and Sherry Honey, local tourism and hotel/venue professional. With over 30 years of experience each, these partners have curated an evening that is welcoming and delicious.
Three Course Fondue Menu
- Swiss cheese fondue with fresh apples, Steve & Dan’s apple chips, Gull Valley cherry tomatoes, gherkin pickles, local baguette and Meuwly’s garlic ring.
- Cooking fondue with Four Whistle Farms beef, chicken, pork; Italian Centre tiger prawns; Steve and Dan’s white nugget potatoes.
Jacek chocolate fondue with homemade marshmallows and sweet and salty chewy bars from Whimsical Cakes, fresh and dried fruits, shortbread cookies, toffee bits for dipping.

The Northern Light Dining Experience includes a delicious three-course fondue meal in a unique, private dining dome, access to your personal dome for the entire evening, and admission to the Luminaria event. $125 per person + tax.
FAQs – good to read before you order
What about allergies and special diets?
Our facilities contain wheat and dairy products. While there are no nuts on the menu, some products may be prepared in a facility with nuts on the premises. We can make substitutions to accommodate gluten-free, vegetarian, halal, shellfish allergy, or pork-free diets. Please indicate allergies and special diets when you register online, and contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any concerns.
Is there a different price for children?
The price for children age 3-12 is $50 plus tax. Children age two and under are free. If there are children in your group, please go ahead and place your order for the total number of people in your group, and then contact us for pricing adjustments. Children need to be kept close to their parents/caregivers at all times.
How many people can be in a group for the Northern Light Dining Experience?
The maximum number of guests in each dining space is six. If you have a group larger than six, we will divide you among several domes and will make every effort to place you close to each other – please contact us by email for assistance.
What safety measures are in place to minimize the spread of COVID-19?
The University of Alberta has a Proof of Vaccine policy in place for all visitors. Please review the policy before you arrive, as it is subject to change. Each of our indoor dining spaces is used by only one group per evening and is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between uses. Serving staff wear masks. The Luminaria event is outdoors, and capacities are limited. Masks are required in indoor spaces (eg. washrooms), but are not required within your dining dome.
When should we arrive? How long can we stay?
When you make your online reservation, you will be asked to select an arrival time (5:30, 6:00, 6:30 or 7 pm). Please plan to arrive on time. You will have a walk of approx. 10-15 minutes from the Garden entrance to your dining area. After your second course, you can move right onto dessert and enjoy Luminaria afterwards, or you might decide to walk through the candles and light displays and come back to your dome for your dessert course. The choice is yours. You will have exclusive access to your dining space until 10 pm.
We recommend you plan to spend 2-2.5 hours for dining, plus another 1-2 hours to enjoy Luminaria.
How should I prepare? Is there anything we should bring?
Plan to dress appropriately for the weather, with warm comfortable footwear, so you can enjoy the outdoor Luminaria event. The dining domes are heated, however, we recommend dressing in layers so you can adjust for your comfort. The domes may be cooler than a typical indoor restaurant setting.
What about gratuities?
Gratuities are not included in the price. Servers are able to accept tips by cash, debit or credit card.
I am a Garden Experience Passholder. Is there special pricing?
Yes! Garden Experience Passholders are eligible for a discount. Please go ahead and book your order for the total number of people in your group, then contact us for price adjustments.
Can I bring my own drinks or food?
Outside alcohol and food is not permitted. Wine, beer, cider and non alcoholic beverages are available for purchase. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and water are included with your ticket.
What is the cancellation policy?
There are no refunds for the Northern Light Dining Experience, with limited exceptions.
You may reschedule to another date (subject to availability) up to 9 am on the day of your dining reservation. If you need to reschedule, please send us an email at email@example.com.
If, before 12 pm on the day of your dining reservation, there is a severe weather warning issued by Environment Canada, the Garden may cancel the experience. Similarly, if the temperature drops below a certain threshold, the Garden may cancel. We will notify you by phone and reschedule to another date, subject to availability. If there are no alternative dates available, you will be refunded.
If you or any member of your party has symptoms of COVID-19 please do not come to the Garden. Contact us to arrange for a refund before 12 pm on the day of your dinner. Cancellations received after 12 pm will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

Any rules I should know about?
You can help to keep the Garden a beautiful, special place by sticking to the pathways when you’re outside at the Luminaria event – there is fragile plant life under the snow. Important to remember: pets and smoking (of any kind) are not permitted at the Garden.
