What is a botanic garden?

In addition to being a beautiful place, a botanic garden is a museum of living plants. A botanic garden’s plant collections are curated for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display and education. Botanic gardens are important for a number of reasons, including the conservation of plant diversity around the world, research into plant taxonomy and genetics, and the promotion of plant and conservation education to diverse audiences.

Where are you located? Are you on the University of Alberta campus?

The University of Alberta Botanic Garden (formerly the Devonian Botanic Garden) is located in Parkland County - only 15 minutes from West Edmonton Mall or SW Edmonton (5 km north of Devon on Highway 60 at 51227 AB 60, Parkland County, T7Y 1C5). We are not located on the University of Alberta campus.

What are all the labels for?

The plants in a botanic garden are labelled and documented. Each label contains a plant’s scientific (Latin) name, family name, native region and its accession number. Every plant is assigned a unique accession number, which is how we track the plant over its life. Taxonomy (the classification of species) is constantly evolving, so sometimes the plant names on labels in any garden are not current; the revision and updating of labels and plant records is a continual undertaking at a botanic garden.

Can I catch a bus to the Garden?

Sorry, there is no public transportation to the Garden. A vehicle is necessary to get here.

What about parking?

There is free parking at the Garden (except during the Luminaria event). Bus and limousine parking is available in designated areas. RV parking is available in overflow parking lot - inquire at Gift Shop.

Is the Garden wheelchair accessible?

An extensive brick pathway system makes much of the Garden accessible and enjoyable from wheelchairs and strollers. Some pathways have less accessible surfaces (grass, wood chips, gravel, uneven surfaces, natural areas), and there are some areas with stairs or steep grades where assistance is recommended for wheelchairs.

Do you have strollers or wheelchairs available for rent?

The Garden has a small collection of wheelchairs and strollers that can be borrowed, at no cost, on a first-come, first-serve basis. We are not able to guarantee availability.

Can I rent a golf cart?

Sorry, golf carts are not available for rent. There are a number of options if you want to ride during your visit: a Guided Tram Tour takes you through the Garden in seated comfort, with an informative 45 minute interpretive tour. Or, you may prefer our new Bee Line tram service, an unguided service that allows visitors to get off and on at a series of stops throughout the Garden.

Can I ride my bike through the Garden?

Sorry, bikes, tricycles and skateboards are not permitted inside the Garden. There are bike racks located outside the Gift Shop, and near the entrance to the Devonian Trail in Parking Lot B.

Can I walk my dog at the Garden?

Sorry, with the exception of certified service animals, pets are not permitted inside the Garden. Please leave pets at home.

Can I bring my own food to the Garden?

Food is available for purchase at the Patio Café. Picnicking is permitted at the Garden, with some restrictions. Barbeques, cooking equipment, sports equipment and alcohol are not permitted. Unreserved picnic areas are limited. Unreserved picnic space is not available for large groups (10+) or special occasion functions. Groups should inquire ahead about renting our reserved group areas at or 780-492-3138. Picnicking is discouraged in the Kurimoto Japanese Garden.

Can I buy plants at the Garden?

In addition to an annual plant sale on Mother's Day weekend, a selection of plants are available for purchase throughout the season.

Can I visit in the winter?

The Garden is open to visitors seasonally, May 1 through Thanksgiving. During the winter, the Garden is closed to visitors; however, education courses run year-round and we open for a weekend in December for the Luminaria event.
